Frequently Asked Questions

How do I become a volunteer?
You will be invited to meet with one of the Volunteering Team for an informal chat to discuss the appropriate placement for you.  You may be given the opportunity to visit your preferred location and meet the patients/residents.

Will there be a lot of forms to fill in?
You will be required to complete an Application Form, a Disclosure Scotland check and possibly an Occupational Health Check.  Having a police record won't necessarily prevent you from volunteering with us.

How much time do I need to give?
This is up to you!  Volunteers can be involved for a couple of hours a week, once a fortnight or once a month - it's entirely up to you.  Whatever you decide your help will make a difference.

What can I expect?
We will make sure you know who your named contact person is for guidance, supervision and support.
We will make sure you have safe working conditions.
We will pay your out of pocket expenses.
We will give you a reference on request.
We will aim to ensure you enjoy your volunteering!

What do we ask of you?
To consider making a commitment to volunteer for at least 6 months.
To attend induction and other training as needed.
To abide by NHS Tayside's policies and procedures.
To respect patient confidentiality.
To treat everyone you come into contact with as a volunteer with dignity and respect, whether they are volunteers, staff, patients or the general public.
To give as much notice as possible if you cannot attend.
To tell us about any concerns you may have.

What do I need for voluntary driving?
You need a clean, current driving licence and your car should be insured, roadworthy and have a current MOT certificate.  In addition to the standard recruitment paperwork, you will have to complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire.

I want to work in healthcare - how can I get experience?
You will not be shadowing healthcare staff but through the course of your volunteering you will be able to observe the daily routine in a hospital environment and gain valuable practical experience.  Contact your local Volunteering Services Team to discuss the current opportunities.

Can I register for Saltire Awards?
Yes we encourage volunteers under 25 years old to register for the scheme.  We will keep track of your hours and organise certificates at each milestone.
