Our Interpretation and Translation Services

NHS Tayside wishes to provide excellent person centered health care services for all. This means that communication cannot be a barrier to access to care for people who cannot speak or find it difficult to speak in English, or read English, or those who are profoundly Deaf or Deafblind people.

NHS Tayside provides interpretation and translation services for people who:

• cannot speak or find it difficult to speak in English
• who are Deaf and use British Sign Language
• are Deafblind

This service is available for patients and their carers and relatives who use NHS and joint NHS and social care services. This includes all hospital care, GP appointments, optometrist, NHS dentist, pharmacy and community healthcare services.

Interpretation Services

Telephone for spoken language

A 24-hour, 7-days-a-week telephone interpretation service is available for people who cannot speak or find it difficult to speak in English. This service spoken languages only and provides interpretation in over 200 languages. The service works by a professional interpreter using the telephone to interpret between the patient and the healthcare staff. This not suitable for all interpretation and should be assessed by the healthcare member of staff for use or whether a face to face interpreter is required.

Face-to-Face interpreting for spoken language and British Sign Language (BSL) interpreting for profoundly deaf patients

Face-to-face and BSL interpreting is provided 24hrs/7days a week by NHS Tayside Interpreter booking service for a person who cannot speak or find it difficult to speak in English of who use British Sign Language (BSL). Guide Communicators for patients who are Deafblind

Guide communicators for Deafblind people are provided by Deafblind Scotland. Any member of healthcare staff book a guide communicator or for tactile British Sign Language (BSL) by calling DeafBlind Scotland on Telephone: 01417776111 or Email: info@deafblindscotland.org.uk.

Translation Services (for written information)

Language Line Solutions can provide translation of written information for non-English speaking patients. Healthcare staff can arrange this if you need it.

Only staff can access the above services. However, all patients, families and carers can ask staff to arrange for an interpreter or translation of a patient leaflet or other patient information.
