PhD and Fellowship for NHS Tayside Pharmacy Manager

Carol Nairn, Head of Medicines Supply Chain for NHS Tayside, has gained a PhD from Abertay University for her thesis on Pharmacy Technician Regulation and Professionalism and has also been awarded a Fellowship of the Association of Pharmacy Technicians UK (APTUK).

Pharmacy technicians became a regulated profession with the General Pharmaceutical Council in 2011. Carol’s research sought to explore professionalism in modern healthcare and relate this to how hospital pharmacy technicians, as a newly-recognised profession, could be supported and further developed.

As well as being recognised as an excellent piece of academic work, a number of Carol’s recommendations regarding policy, practice and education and training are being put into practice both locally and nationally. In addition, Carol plans to further develop her research findings in conjunction with pharmacy technician colleagues across the UK.

The APTUK, the leadership body for pharmacy technicians, has awarded Carol a Fellowship in recognition of advanced expertise and sustained professionalism. It further recognises exceptional professional performance or outstanding service contribution to pharmacy at a local or national level. Being awarded a Fellowship is one of the highest honours that can be bestowed upon APTUK members.

NHS Tayside Director of Pharmacy Frances Rooney said, “As well as this being a fantastic personal achievement for Carol, her work in Tayside and nationally is helping to shape the pharmacy technician profession – something that both Carol and NHS Tayside can be very proud of.”
