Dementia Network set for £3500 boost

The Scottish Dementia Clinical Research Network (SDCRN), which is based at Murray Royal Hospital in Perth, received a welcome boost from a star-studded tennis fundraising event.

Scottish tennis player Malcolm Watt presented SDCRN manager Emma Law with a cheque for £3540 on Friday 24 July which will be used for research into frontotemporal dementia. Malcolm has defied doctors’ expectations by continuing to play tennis since being diagnosed with the condition in 2011.

A host of stars including Judy Murray, footballer Alan Rough, newsreader Sally Magnusson and Still Game actors Sanjeev Kohli and Greg Hemphill took part in the Rally for Bally event at the Western Tennis Club in Glasgow.

More than £14,000 was raised and the funds will be shared between the SDCRN, The Elena Baltacha Tennis Foundation and Sally Magnusson’s Playlist For Life dementia charity.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the SDCRN, manager Emma Law said, “We are delighted to receive this money which will go towards dementia research in Scotland.

“The Rally for Bally event was very well attended by the tennis fraternity in Scotland and we are very pleased that the organisers and Malcolm and his family have enabled us to add this significant amount to our dementia research funds.”
