Perth dad donates almost £2500 to renal unit at Ninewells Hospital

A Perth dad who saved his son’s life by donating his kidney has now donated around £2500 to the renal unit where he was treated.

Tony Green gave his son Anthony the ultimate gift when he underwent an operation to donate his kidney.

Anthony was just 21-years-old when he fell ill and was referred to the renal clinic at Ninewells Hospital, where he attended regular appointments for treatment. Following long-term care, Anthony was later referred for a transplant assessment.

Anthony’s parents Tony and Linda and his siblings immediately offered to become a live donor to help save Anthony’s life and the family were tested to see if they were suitable.

Following numerous medical tests and assessments, Tony was found to be the most suitable donor and he later donated his kidney to his son in 2007.

Kind-hearted Tony recently retired from his job at Scotrail and at his retirement party in the City Sports & Social Club in Perth asked family and friends to make a donation to the Renal Unit at Ninewells Hospital, where Anthony received his treatment.

He presented a cheque for almost £2500 to NHS Tayside transplant coordinator Irene Russell.

Irene said, “Tony has shown us what a wonderful act of kindness, generosity and love can do to transform another person’s life. To really show the impact of this kind act, you can look no further than Anthony himself, who is now healthy and is a dad himself.

“We want to say thank you to Tony and his family and friends for their generous donation.”

Tony said, “I wanted to say a big thank you to the staff at renal unit at Ninewells Hospital for everything they did for Anthony. I also want to thank all my family and friends for their kind donations. I hope this money will help other people.

“I decided to become an organ donor as I wanted to help my son and give him the quality of life we had always hoped for him. I would also like to encourage people to think about organ donation by joining the organ donor register.”
