New textile art exhibition at Whitehills gallery

Patients, staff and visitors at Whitehills Health & Community Care Centre in Forfar can enjoy a new art exhibition showcasing textile artwork created by Angus artist Shelagh Gardiner.

Running throughout April and May the exhibition features a range of stitched fabric artwork. Shelagh’s work has been on tour throughout the UK, courtesy of the Embroiderers' Guild, and in exhibitions throughout Scotland at fundraising events for charities.

Speaking about her work, Shealgh said, “A number of years ago I took up patchwork and quilting, which I still love and practise. My attention was also drawn to the Creative Textiles classes at Duncan of Jordanstone, and there I encountered a whole brave new world of colour, texture and pattern.

“I love working with textiles - they are all around us, and all over the world. Woven, printed, dyed, embroidered, patched, quilted, made from plants or petrochemicals – textiles are at the heart of the most versatile and enduring of the decorative arts.

“Using stitching, by hand or machine, traditional, contemporary, controlled or quirky, simple or elaborate, we can enhance the surface of fabric by adding colour, texture and pattern using a fantastic variety of threads and other yarns.

“I enjoy stitching by myself and in groups, going to shows, learning from other textile artists, and exhibiting my work.”

Exhibitions at Whitehills are changed every eight weeks. All of Shelagh’s artworks are for sale, with 20% commission on all sales being donated to the Strathmore Hospice.

Situated in the main corridor, the gallery has provided space for many local artists to show their work and the public are invited to pop in and view this new exhibition.
