The Corner tackles ‘legal highs’

The Corner Young People’s Health, Information and Peer Led Services have launched a new summer health campaign focusing on the effects of New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) and their recent ban.

The Lethal Highs Fatal Lows – New Psychoactive Substances campaign has been developed in partnership with Young Addaction Dundee.

Formerly known as ‘legal highs’, the law changed in May making it an offence to produce, supply, offer to supply, possess with intent to supply, import or export (including over the internet) any psychoactive substances. Supplying could result in a fine and/or up to seven years in jail.

NPS can cause a range of different effects including paranoia, increased heart rate, hallucination, depression, addiction and withdrawal. The strength and type of NPS may vary so users can never be certain of what they are taking and what effects they may be.

During the campaign young people are asked to complete a short questionnaire to gauge their knowledge on NPS, the ban, and how the ban is influencing their choices.

Social media, information leaflets, NPS ‘scratch and sniff’ cards and an interactive Choices for Life film are being used to promote the campaign as well as giving guidance on emergency situations. This has also provided The Corner with an opportunity to promote a drugs education resource pack ‘Writing to Reach You’ which was developed in partnership with local services.
