IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

NHS Tayside supports Recycle Week 2016

NHS Tayside staff and visitors are being encouraged to go green during Recycle Week 2016.

Recycle Week 2016, which is coordinated by Zero Waste Scotland, runs between the 12 – 18 September and aims to get everyone recycling more by raising awareness of the benefits and promoting easy ways to do more.

NHS Tayside’s head of environmental management Philip Wilde said, “Recycle Week is the perfect chance for people to find out how they can ‘do their bit’ to help NHS Tayside reduce its carbon footprint, improve sustainability, meet environmental targets and reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.

“By making simple changes to our daily routines, we can make a real difference and take positive steps to help the environment.”

Recycle Week works alongside NHS Tayside’s ‘Care to Save’ campaign which centres around four key green themes - energy, transport, recycling and sustainability.

NHS Tayside is working towards meeting the Scottish Government targets set for the disposal of waste.

By 2025, 70% of health board’s waste must be recycled or composed, with only 5% going to landfill.

Iain Gulland, Chief Executive of Zero Waste Scotland said, “Recycle Week is all about mobilising action and getting as many people across Scotland to recycle more.

“Recent years have seen recycling becoming much more commonplace across the country, but we could all be doing a little bit more – whether it’s running an event in your workplace, or starting to recycle food waste at home, Recycle Week is a great time to commit to picking up a new habit and helping Scotland move towards our ambitious targets.

“It’s great to see NHS Tayside taking part and I would encourage local authorities, businesses, community groups, schools and universities to get involved and sign up for Recycle Week.”

People can also follow activity and share messages throughout the week at the Recycle for Scotland Facebook page or using #RecycleWeekScot on Twitter.
