Blairgowrie Stroke Group art celebration

Members of the Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, Blairgowrie Stroke Group held a celebration of their artwork at St Catherine’s Church Hall in Blairgowrie today (Monday, 21 November).

The event is the finale of a programme that has been made possible by ST/ART, an arts project for Stroke and Acquired Brain Injury participants across Tayside, which is run by Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT) in association with NHS Tayside.

Family, friends and colleagues visiting the exhibition saw the diverse range of work produced by the participants who used different techniques including watercolours and mixed media collage. Today’s celebration display featured a selection of work made by each participant revealing their progress through the programme.

Lead artist Shona Barr said, “It has been great to be working with the group as they are all so keen and committed to trying new things. I have noticed a real sense of increased confidence and surprise in their ability.”

Chris Kelly THAT Project Co-ordinator, said, “Shona has challenged and inspired the group, working from a theme of nature and the results are stunning.”

Blairgowrie Stroke Club Volunteers said, “We are really grateful to have the ST/ART project provide this level of creative engagement for the group. Over the years this has been a valued programme opportunity for the group to create some marvellous work.”

The watercolour and mixed media collage programme was designed by Lead Artist Shona Barr to encourage the group’s creativity and facilitate an enjoyable non-intimidating approach to drawing and painting. This is one of a range of art programmes for people with long term conditions currently being delivered by THAT, which promotes creative engagement to enhance participant’s health and wellbeing.
