NHS Tayside celebrates International Nurses’ Day

NHS Tayside is celebrating International Nurses Day today (Friday) with events being held in Ninewells Hospital and Royal Victoria Hospital.

International Nurses’ Day is celebrated every year around the world on 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. It recognises the incredible work nursing staff do caring for patients and their families.

Nurses on wards 5 and 6 are donning superhero capes while in non-ward areas to celebrate the day and are providing tea, coffee and cake for patients and relatives.

Energetic members of staff are also taking part in a sponsored 10-hour cycle during their own time to raise money for the Tayside Health Fund for patient comforts in ward 5 and 6.

Staff within the medicine directorate are taking part in an event to celebrate nursing in the main concourse of Ninewells.

Nursing through the years in NHS Tayside will be recognised, alongside many of the roles that registered nurses hold across the region. Nursing staff also plan to speak to members of the public, to give them the chance to provide feedback about what nursing means to them.

Nurses in Royal Victoria Hospital will enjoy cakes to celebrate the day and have been given the chance to take part in a raffle to win a pamper bag.

Staff and visitors can also hang messages on a comment tree to give their view on why nurses are superheroes – the theme for this year’s Nurses’ Day.

Members of the public can also help us celebrate International Nurses’ Day by posting on NHS Tayside’s Facebook and Twitter pages about the positive nursing care they have received.

Associate Director of Nursing Jim Foulis said, “We have around 5,000 nurses working across Tayside and International Nurses’ Day is a wonderful opportunity to say thank you to our dedicated teams of nurses. The contribution they make in caring for our patients is vital to our services and we know they provide fantastic care for people throughout the region.”
