Appeal for volunteers for Roxburghe House

Roxburghe House in Dundee is looking for more volunteers. Do you have an hour or two to spare each week and an interest in volunteering?

There is already a dedicated team of volunteers providing a range of services supporting staff within the unit but more volunteers are needed to continue to provide these services.

The unit is looking for volunteer gardeners, drivers to support patient transport and in the inpatient unit where volunteers assist with teas and coffees as well as spending time chatting with patients.

Jimmy Orr, Volunteer Service Manager, said, “We have opportunities for volunteers to work in our gardens, help with patient transport and in the inpatient unit at Roxburghe House.

“We would like to hear from members of the public who have an interest in basic gardening, have a couple of hours free to support patient transport or have some free time that could be spent with patients and staff on our wards.

“A commitment of an hour or two a week is all that is required and all our volunteers are offered support to enable them to carry out their role. Volunteers receive training in a range of topics including infection control and have regular meetings with their volunteer service manager who will provide support and advice.”

Roxburghe House at Royal Victoria Hospital provides specialist palliative care to patients living with a life limiting illness such as cancer.

Palliative care aims to improve the quality of life of individuals and their families facing the problems associated with a life-limiting illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering. It provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms and offers a support system to help the family cope during the person’s illness and in their own bereavement.
