Psychiatry of Old Age patients in Angus have been planting the seeds of a new outdoor sensory project.

The Friends of Susan Carnegie Centre generously donated a greenhouse and garden centre gift card to the Willow Unit Sensory Garden Project, which was used to create a stimulating outdoor area for patients with dementia.

Garden activities provide many physical health benefits for people with dementia and the new outdoor area will offer multi-sensory stimulation experiences with colour, smell, touch, sound and taste, as well as helping patients’ orientation through seasonal planting and garden decorations.

The open air space also allows for group activities to take place and provides a peaceful area for patients and their families.

Occupational therapy assistant Diane Forbes said, “This is a long term project and thanks to the continued support and generosity of the Friends of Susan Carnegie Centre we are off to a great start.”
