Watercolours exhibition by Forfar Stroke Group

A selection of watercolour paintings created by members of the Forfar Stroke Group went on display today (Tuesday).

The artwork, which was displayed in the Forfar Fire Station training room, was produced as part of the ST/ART arts project.

ST/ART is an arts project for stroke and acquired brain injury participants across Tayside. This popular project is run by Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT), in association with NHS Tayside.

The watercolour programme is one of a range of creative engagement programmes for people with long term conditions currently being delivered by THAT.

During the eight-session programme, participants experimented with different watercolour techniques using salt, cling film, rollers and combining elements using collage.

Lead artist Shona Barr and volunteer artist Tarka Heath worked with the group and encouraged each member to produce a range of pieces exploring the watercolour techniques, before applying them to their individual finale pieces.

Shona said, “Working with watercolours is such an expressive process that everyone can enjoy regardless of the outcomes of their stroke. The group has been engrossed from the very start and have produced some wonderful work.”

Chris Kelly, THAT Projects Co-ordinator, said, “The group has responded very well to Shona’s programme and we have seen the enthusiasm grow every week.

“We have worked with the group for a number of years providing them with a wide range of creative opportunities and they always respond very positively. This is the first time they have painted with watercolours and they have surprised themselves with the quality of their work.”

THAT was set up in 2002 and promotes creative engagement, using a variety of different art forms, as a means of improving the health and wellbeing of participants with a range of long term conditions.
