Podiatry (Foot Functions)

Podiatry is a medical speciality which diagnosis and treats foot related problems of patient with an assessed risk; providing education and support for self management in order to promote foot health.

As podiatrists our aim is to maintain or improve the independence, mobility and general quality of life of our patients.

Referral to the Service

Referral to the service can be made by GP / Practice Nurse / Community Nurse / Healthcare Professional / Self Referral. All referrals are triaged by a Podiatrist and allocated as Soon, Urgent or Routine. This is determined from the information received on the referral. Priority is given to urgent and soon referrals. We aim to see urgent referrals within 5 working days and soon referrals within 1-8 weeks.

The Assessment

At the initial appointment, the podiatrist will assess both your medical and podiatric need. It is important that you bring a full list of your current medication with you.

Following the assessment, patients who require podiatry intervention will be offered a plan with the aim of maintaining tissue viability, reducing pain, improving mobility and promoting independence, leading to discharge with advice where appropriate.
