At the start

Over the next few days and weeks you will have regular contact with the diabetes team, including the dietitian. You might find it useful to write down any questions that you may have as they crop up, so that you remember to ask them.

Avoidance of sugary foods and drinks

The dietitian will talk you through all aspects of diabetes & food. With diabetes, no food is “banned” but until your blood glucose levels are stabilised it is important that you avoid sugary foods and drinks.

Here’s a few tips to help you do this:
  • Switch to sugar free diluting juice
  • Avoid sugary fizzy juice and switch to diet fizzy drinks
  • Avoid fresh fruit juice
  • Avoid any sugary foods e.g. sweets / chocolate / cakes

Feeling hungry

After you have returned home from hospital and started on your insulin injections you may find that you are very hungry. This is normal and will settle in a few weeks.
