About the Department

The Department is proud of its strong links to the University of Dundee Medical School.

Professor John F Dillon heads a team of twelve Consultants.

Patient population

The Department serves the large geographical catchment area covered by NHS Tayside, amounting to a population of approximately 500,000.

Specialist care

The Consultants provide specialist care based around our specialist ward (Ward 2, Ninewells Hospital) and out-patient areas.Care is provided on a team-based approach; In-patient care, Out-patient care teams, and also teams specialising on the management of Liver Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Nutritional failure.

National Endoscopy Training Centre

The Department was instrumental in the development of JAG approved endoscopy training courses at the on-site Cuschieri Surgical Skills Centre. This centre is now a National Endoscopy Training Centre; members of the Department provide local Faculty on all courses.

Research

The Department is fortunate to have the support of the Clinical Research Centre and its research nurses. It has a long track record of research in Liver Disease, Endoscopy, Inflammatory bowel disease, Early detection of bowel cancer, and Pharmaceutical industry sponsored studies.
