Health Promotion

Rohallion Health Working Lives Bronze Award
Reflections from Promoting Health Throughout the Year:

Healthy Lifestyles

Men Matter

The men’s health promotion was a one day event providing an opportunity to draw a variety of hospital and community based services and professions to promote various aspects of health. Representatives from within the clinic and community services provided expertise in smoking cessation, early detection cancer, sexual health, drug and alcohol awareness, podiatry, dietetics, physiotherapy and basic life support providing a variety of stalls, activities and information to encourage patients to consider all aspects of health that may impact them individually.

Health Start Training

The presence of ‘Heart Start’ basic life supporting training, at the event brought awareness to the patients of the role they could play in basic life support. Various patients expressed an interest in learning these skills and therefore a three hour training session was set up to offer the opportunity to learn the theory and practical skills of basic life support and gain a recognised certificate.

Physical Activity

Throughout the year a variety of specialised events have been held to increase the variety of physical activities available. A world cup five aside tournament last summer brought patients and staff together in teams promoting working together. The day was a great success and has brought bigger events within the sporting calendar such as tennis, cycling, golf and rowing challenges.

Amongst the day to day physical activities on offer we have continued to utilise the gym and sports hall offering a variety of racket and ball games, with the introduction of a physiotherapist within the clinic has enabled new opportunities. Starting regular Tai Chi and circuits classes has sparked patients interests in offering a wider variety of physical activities at a variety of intensities and skills.

Healthy Eating

Throughout day to day intervention eating a healthy diet is encouraged. New initiatives jointly delivered by Dietetics, Occupational Therapy and nursing have sought to keep healthy eating high on patients priorities. The introduction of ‘healthy start’ breakfast group and health promotion events on individual wards have been focused towards patients and staff who specifically need Weight Management support as well as creating a culture of health. The focus of these groups is healthy meal planning; healthy cooking methods and appropriate portion control. These sessions have equipped patients with the practical skills needed to implement healthy eating advice as well as inform staff with the knowledge to support patients in their day to day interactions.

A healthy lifestyle group runs every Tuesday evening in Birnam focusing on healthy eating and exercise.

Where Next

The variety of these events have begun to lay a foundation for the importance of maintaining your health exploring the role of diet, physical activity and lifestyle choices. It will enable us to build on these as a service identifying areas of focus supporting both informal daily guidance as well as strategic intervention.

The implementation this year of our physical health activity pathway will seek to support each patient achieving the government goal of thirty minutes of physical activity five times a week. Secondly we seek to continue drug and alcohol awareness particularly drawing attention to the negative impact of Novel Psychoactive Substances on both mental and physical health. Lastly our final focus will be gathering information through statistics which will demonstrate the benefits or not of interventions, thereby enabling individual patients to see the progress they are making as well as capturing this information as a whole service.

List of some activities the patients have been involved with over past 12 months are:- MacMillan Coffee morning, Pumpkin Carving, World Cup football tournament, Commonwealth Challenges, Independence Referendum Debate, Great Bake Off in Ythan & Lyon Wards, Christmas Fayre, Cinema/Movie nights, Christmas & New Year Quiz, Spey Triathlon Challenge, Wimbledon Tennis tournament, Couch to 5K challenge and Rohallion to Rio Challenge. A community café is held every 2nd Wednesday in Birnam.
