Also involved in your care will be Staff Nurses one of whom will be allocated as your named nurse. On occasion student nurses may complete their work placement in Esk Ward.

Student Nurses
Esk Ward is committed to the training and development of nurses. Student nurses are valued as part of the team and have an important part to play in the care delivery of your care.

Nursing assistants will support and assist you to meet your needs.

The ward domestic keeps the environment clean.

Named Nurse/Associate Nurse
Prior to your arrival to the ward you will have had contact with your named nurse at the transitional stage (best practice) at this time you will also be informed of your associate nurse and support nurse.

On arrival to the ward your named nurse/ associate nurse and support nurse will spend time with you to get you involved in your care, and support you to voice your needs and enable you to make choices in your care, giving you the confidence to ask questions relating to your treatment.  Your care is provided using the enhanced care programme approach.

Clinical Meetings
Esk Ward has three Consultant Psychiatrists, Dr Ahammed, Dr MacAulay and Dr McGlen.

Prior to the meeting your named nurse/associate nurse will have a chat with you and ascertain if you have any requests or questions for the Team attending clinical meeting. This will enable the nurse to write a summary of your well being for that week and then this will be discussed at the clinical meeting. After the meeting the presenting nurse will discuss any outcome as this will keep you involved in your care and treatment at this point you will be asked to sign or make your comments known on the clinical meeting documentation.

Every fortnight your Consultant will see you to discuss your care and treatment.

Other disciplines who may attend these meetings are nursing staff, Junior Doctor, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist, Social Workers, Mental Health Officers, Physiotherapist , Dietician and Pharmacist.
Each discipline will meet with you to inform you of their role and what involvement they will have in your care and treatment.

Bedroom Area

  • All bedrooms have en suite facilities
  • A washing basket, clothes horse and hangers are supplied for you
  • Hospital bedding is supplied, but should you prefer your own and you have sufficient funds then you will be able to purchase your own covers
  • As part of the ward infection control audit. Nursing staff carry out checks on the condition of the mattresses weekly at this time you will be supplied with clean bedding, as we aim to promote your independence we will encourage you to carry out the task of making your own bed and keeping your bedroom tidy. For those who require some assistance staff will help you
  • On occasion it may be necessary that staff will carry out room searches should this occur you will be informed and can be present
  • Some of your belongings can be locked under your bed otherwise any excess items will need to be placed in the low secure storage room
  • A protocol for patients entering another’s bedroom is under review
  • Please be considerate of noise levels for your peers in the next bedroom
  • Personal televisions are allowed in your bedroom
  • Televisions are to be switched off at midnight

Ward Communal Area

Group Room
The group room is used for clinical meetings, patient interviews, there is also a pay phone for you to make outgoing calls, any incoming calls will first go through the office phone then be transferred to the pay phone . This room is locked throughout the day so you will need to approach a member staff to gain access to the room for use.

Pool Room
When not in use this room is kept locked, this room is also used as a relaxation area patients are supervised when the room is in use.

Communal Activity Area
Within the day area we have a television, DVD player an Xbox 360 with games and CD player for patients to use. There are also ward based activities that you can be involved in with the staff such as a variety of board games, playing cards, dominos, and table tennis.

The Hub Café is in the main building there are also vending machines supplying hot and cold drinks and snacks.

Rohallion Clinic also has vending machines supplying snacks and cold drinks.

Visitors

All visitors have to be agreed by your Consultant and documentation has to be completed before any visits can take place.

Visits should be planned in advance so the ward can give notice to the reception staff. All visits are supervised by nursing staff. The visit will be held in the designated visitor’s room just outside the ward off the airlock. If children or any person with mobility difficulties are visiting the staff will arrange for the family room to be booked this is beside reception Scapa area these visits are also supervised by staff.

19.00-20.00hr

Should there be more than one visit planned on the same day then we would ask that each visit is for an hour.

Visitors arriving at the reception area will be asked if they have any prohibited items these can be left in a locker provided and items collected on their way out.

Smoking

Rohallion Clinic is a smoke free environment. You can purchase ‘single use’ only vapes which you are permitted to use in outdoor areas only. If you want to help to give up smoking please speak to your doctor about nicotine replacement which may help you

Therapies

Esk Wards

Occupational Therapy staff will consult with you and explain the activities on offer then with your participation a personalised activity planner timetable will be devised. This planner will be updated on a weekly basis by your named/associate nurse and you will receive a copy of this. A devised occupational therapy timetable of social, sport and recreational activities is available to you a copy of this has been placed on your bedroom wall for your perusal.

Occupational Therapy provide 1:1 and group sessions with patients.

They can also assist you to apply for college courses, voluntary work or look at new hobbies you might be interested in starting.

Educational Tutors
There is an opportunity for you to get involved in computer work or numeracy and literacy sessions.

Activities on the ward
We can organise pool competitions, quiz nights, board games, cards, table tennis, bingo, baking, cooking and staff permitting patients can be accompanied to Scapa gym/sports hall.

Having a structured day will keep you feeling well and in control of your life.

Other Services

Advocacy
An independent advocacy service is available if you wish to use them. This service helps patients by supporting them to express their needs and make informed decisions. For further information on this service or to book an appointment the telephone number is 01738 587887.

Chaplaincy
In Esk Ward we respect everyone’s religious or cultural beliefs. NHS chaplains work to care for the spiritual needs of the patient and help anyone going through a traumatic experience.

General Practitioner
Rohallion has a general practitioner service on a Monday and Friday which patients can attend.

Podiatrist
Podiatrist attends Rohallion clinic on a regular basis.

Hairdresser
There is also a hairdresser who attends Rohallion Clinic.  There is a charge for this service.
