Vaara Ward

Vaara Ward is a 12 bedded Medium Secure Rehabilitation Ward caring for male patients.
Patients admitted to this ward can originate from the North of Scotland, locally, as well as patients from outwith this area.

Vaara Ward Team

During your stay, you will be looked after by a “Multi-disciplinary Team” consisting of your Psychiatrist, Nursing Staff, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist, Social Worker, GP, Mental Health Officer, Physiotherapist, Dietician and Advocacy. You will meet with team members within your first couple of weeks on the ward.

Named Nurse/Key Worker

On admission, you will be allocated a named nurse who will support you with settling into the ward. They will get to know you and we encourage you to meet regularly with them to discuss any concerns you may have and so they can support you in your recovery journey. We hope you find all the staff friendly and approachable, as they are all available to discuss any queries regarding your care pathway.

Bedrooms

  • You have your own room with an en suite.
  • Your bedside cabinet locks which any items which you would like keep safe can be placed. Money and bank cards will be kept in the ward safe for you
  • We ask that you do not enter other patients’ bedrooms.
  • Random room searches are carried out on a weekly basis
  • Your bedding will be changed every Wednesday. We like to promote independence as much as possible so therefore we would appreciate your help with this task
  • Laundry facilities are available on the ward for your clothing
  • When leaving your bedroom please make sure you wear appropriate clothing and footwear in the main ward area.
  • The bedroom corridor will be locked on a daily basis between the hours of 1000-1200 to allow the domestic staff access to the bedrooms for cleaning purposes.

Smoking

Rohallion Clinic is a smoke free environment. You can purchase ‘single use’ only vapes which you are permitted to use in outdoor areas only. If you want to help to give up smoking please speak to your doctor about nicotine replacement which may help you

Activities

We have a variety of activities that you can do in the ward.

  • The day room has a TV, X Box and music system (please see day room times)
  • Pool Table
  • various board games (in the wooden cupboard by pool table)
  • We can arrange for you to cook in the Therapy Kitchen

Patient Activity meeting is held every Monday

Occupational Therapists visit Vaara Ward. They will come and speak with you about hobbies or interests you may have. In time the OT's will arrange for you to use the facilities in SCAPA. You will notice activity timetables around the ward for SCAPA.

Visitors

  • The staff will speak with you regarding visitors. All visitors have to be agreed by the multidisciplinary team
  • All visitors are requested to pre arrange visits.
  • Visits are supervised at all times by a member of staff
  • certain items are not permitted within the ward (please see the restricted items list regarding these items)

Visiting times
  • 14.00- 15.00
  • 19.00-20.00

If these times are not suitable please speak with the Senior Charge Nurse to accommodate.

Chaplaincy

Within Vaara Ward we respect everyone's religious or cultural beliefs. NHS Chaplains work to care for the spiritual needs of the patients and help to support anyone who is suffering from a bereavement or have gone through a traumatic experience. The chaplain is called Gillian Munro and the number for the Spiritual Care Team is 01382 423110.
