Mr Marr, a nurse by background, was appointed Chief Executive of Tayside University Hospitals NHS Trust in August 2001.  He subsequently held the posts of Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Chief Executive and was appointed Chief Executive of NHS Tayside earlier this year.

He has had a long and varied career in the NHS and held a long-term interest and hands-on involvement in patient safety and the science of improvement.

NHS Tayside was the first site in Scotland, and one of only four in the UK, to be a pilot site for The Health Foundation's Safer Patient Initiative and the significant successes delivered of the project encouraged Mr Marr to spearhead a pioneering Tayside-wide approach to patient safety and improvement.

This resulted in NHS Tayside becoming a centre of excellence for improvement methodologies culminating in the recent launch of the Tayside Centre for Organisational Effectiveness (TCOE).  This new centre will lead the way in healthcare quality improvements, patient safety and innovation in ehealth, not only for NHS Tayside but in collaboration with other Health Boards and public sector partners.

He has a personal commitment, as Chief Executive, in the Business Case for Quality.
