Visiting
Visitors may come at any time, subject
to the discretion of the nurse in charge. If your relative/friend is having
treatment you will be required to wait.
Relative Enquiries
The nurse in charge or named nurse will deal with enquiries concerning
your relative/friend's welfare or she will arrange a time for you to see
the appropriate staff member.
Personal Belongings
Please do not keep more than £5 with you in the ward. Larger
sums and valuables should be given to relatives to take home or handed
to ward staff for safe-keeping. The hospital cannot be
held responsible for losses of money or valuables.
The Cashier can bank money or cash pensions.

Smoking
Smoking in
hospital is discouraged. Within some ward areas there is a designated
smoking area - FOR PATIENTS ONLY. It is dangerous to smoke near oxygen.
SMOKING IS BAD FOR EVERYONE'S HEALTH
Visitors are not permitted to smoke anywhere on the hospital premises.
For safety do not give matches to patients or leave your relative/friend
smoking unattended.
Chaplain Service
Please ask if you would like to meet the chaplain or make contact with
someone from your own faith.
What To Bring With You
Toilet bag with soap
Shampoo
Toothbrush and toothpaste/denture cleaner
Face cloth
Talcum powder
Shaving kit or razor (if required)
Soap dish
Hairbrush or comb
Please do not bring any valuables like expensive jewellery or items of
sentimental value.
It is important that you bring ALL your medicines with you. This will
help the Doctor assess your medical needs. It is NOT our policy to return
these medicines, however, should you wish their return, please tell the
Nursing staff. On the day you are discharged from hospital you will be
given a 7-day supply of any medication you are currently taking.
Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy
These services are available
Monday - Friday. Your individual needs will be assessed and then each
therapist will discuss your treatment programme with you.
Care Manager
If
you wish to speak to a Care Manager from the Social Work Department, please
ask a nurse who will be pleased to arrange it.
Podiatry
Should you require to see a
Podiatrist, just ask your nurse.
Dentist
A dental service
is available, please ask your nurse for further details.

Clothing
We have a
clothing booklet. It will give you detailed information on care of your
clothing while in hospital. Please ask nursing staff for a copy.

Our hospital
care manager will advise on pensions, paying bills and obtaining benefits.
Translators
Translators
are available, if required.
Dietetic Service
Tayside Health Board has a food and health policy. Menus in Royal Victoria
Hospital are in line with this. Every ward has a copy of this policy should
you wish to read it. If you wish to see the Dietician just ask your nurse.
Please tell your nurse if you are on a special diet.
Alcohol
You can have
your favourite tipple. First ask your nurse in case it clashes with your
medicines. You may provide the beverage yourself.
Newspapers
These
can be ordered via the nursing staff. TV, video and music centres are
available for use.
Pets
If you have a pet,
a short visit can be arranged if a friend is willing to bring your pet.
Hairdressing
Hairdressing
is available on request. However, there may be a small fee. Ask nursing
staff for further details.
Shop
A shop run by the
WRVS is open at the entrance foyer, between Wards 6 and 8, 2.30-3.30pm
daily.
Teaching and Research
You may be asked to help with teaching of students. This is entirely
voluntary and you are not obliged to be involved.
Caring for your own health
Information on leading a healthy lifestyle is
available in every ward.
What should you expect?
- That you will be treated as an individual with courtesy and respect
for your dignity and culture by appropriately skilled staff.
- That our staff will introduce themselves and speak to you using the
name you prefer.
- That you will be given a clear explanation of procedures and treatment
and be made aware of the options of care available, including a second
opinion should you wish it.
- That our staff will ensure confidentiality of information relating
to you.
- That you will be cared for in safe, warm, clean and comfortable accommodation.
Patients Outings
Trips to shops, pub or around the hospital grounds are actively encouraged
for the patient's benefit. Folding wheelchairs are available for use.
Please ask the nurse in charge.
Fire
If you suspect a fire, call for help immediately. The nursing staff who
have received training in fire drill will give directions which you should
