Visiting
There are no overall restrictions on visiting. Each area will give you
information about visiting at the time of admission.
What To Bring
With You
During your stay storage accommodation will be provided beside your sleeping
area for any clothing and personal belongings. A key for safekeeping can
also be provided.
Below, a check-list of things to bring with you:

All clothes are marked with your name on admission, to avoid any loss
during laundering. If you choose not to have your clothes marked the Hospital
cannot be held responsible for any loss. Labels can be removed before
discharge.

You can select your meal in advance using menus supplied.
Tea, coffee and other soft drinks are served at various times during
the day and evening.
Nutrition
and Dietetic Service
The general aim of the Nutrition and Dietetic Service is to improve nutritional
status, prevent and treat diet related illnesses with advice tailored
to the individuals needs.
All the areas within Strathmartine Hospital have access to a Dietician.
Referral to the service, if required, will be made by Medical staff.
Tayside Health Board has an Area Nutrition Policy. The current menus
incorporate the appropriate recommendations of this Policy.
Every area has a copy of this Policy should you wish to read it.
Shop and
Refreshments Area
There is a small shop in the main building selling a variety of goods.
Refreshments can also be obtained from the shop such as tea, coffee, sandwiches,
cakes, etc.
Opening hours: 11 am to 4 pm daily.

There is a Public telephone located in the main building alongside Reception.
Smoking
Smoking is restricted to designated areas within the Ward/Area and Hospital.
Letters
There is a post box available beside the bus shelter on the main road.

Recreation
Extensive programme of recreational facilities on offer include:
Swimming pool

Outings
Barbecue
Ward based recreation is also available.
Pills and Medicines
When you come to the Hospital it is important that you bring all your
medicines with you. This helps us to make a better assessment of your
health and offer you better care.
Hospital policy is not to return these medicines but should you wish
their return, either you or your Carer should inform the staff of this
on your admission.
A 7 days supply of medication will be given to you on discharge.
You should also bring with you any outpatient appointments you are required
to attend.
Money and Valuables
You are not advised to bring large amounts of money with you. However,
you will require a regular supply of money during your stay for everyday
living and occasional outings.
All monies should be handed to the Nurse in Charge on your admission
where it will be kept under lock and key in the Ward safe.
Documents
If you are in receipt of any benefits, it is advisable to bring your
Benefit book or details with you. You or your Carer must inform the DSS
Office of your admission.
Craigmill Skill
Centre
Professions Allied to Medicine are based in the extensive Craigmill Skill
Centre. These include:
- Physiotherapy
- Dietetics
- Speech and Language Therapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Music Therapy
Spiritual
Chaplains are available to provide support for any patient or carer who wishes. They work in an open way and are there for people of all faiths and none. If you wish, they can make contact with your own minister, priest, imam or faith community for you.

In cases of emergency, nursing staff can contact the out of hours on call Chaplain for you.
Information
on Your Treatment
On admission you and your Carer will be introduced to all staff on duty.
You will also be introduced to your own named nurse. You and your Carer
will be shown around the ward area and introduced to the other patients.
If, during your stay, you or your Carer have any questions about your
treatment, please ask the Doctor or Nurse in Charge of your care.
Information regarding your treatment is strictly confidential. Staff
will not pass on any information without your permission.
Strathmartine Hospital is a hospital where future health professionals
are trained. If you do not wish to be involved in the teaching, you have
the right to say so. If this is the case, please inform Medical or Nursing
staff.
Confidentiality
of Medical Records
Details of your medical care are recorded for future and present care.
A high standard of confidentiality is maintained within the wards and
hospital regarding all recorded information.
If you wish to apply for access to your records, you have the right to
do so under the Data Protection Act 1991.
Discharge
The Nurse in Charge will inform you of your discharge date so as to enable
you to let your friends and relatives know.
Before you leave
Discharge medication will be provided.
All belongings will be packed and checked.
All valuables will be returned to you.
The Hospital will inform you Doctor of your discharge. They will also
inform your local DSS Office of your discharge.
Follow up care can be arranged through Community Nurses, Care Managers
and Social Workers.
Gifts to Wards
Members of staff are not allowed to accept personal gifts of money or
goods. However, all wards can accept gifts for the benefit of patients
to use for funds for extra necessities.
In certain circumstances tax relief is available to individuals and companies
making cash donations.
