Tayside Alcohol Problems Service

What is T.A.P.S.

The Tayside Alcohol Problems Service (T.A.P.S.) provides a full confidential counselling and support service for anyone within the Tayside Region who feels they require advice or help with an alcohol problem. T.A.P.S. is provided by Tayside Primary Care and funded by Tayside Health Board.

Advice and Information

Individuals can contact T.A.P.S. seeking advice or guidance on any alcohol related issues. We provide a direct referral system which means you can contact our service yourself or through other agencies such as your G.P. or Social Work Dept.

Your First Consultation

You will meet with a member of staff on an individual basis. During the meeting, staff will explore options and assist you to decide how best to consider your alcohol problems.

Services Provided

Individual Counselling

Counselling can be arranged at various locations throughout Tayside (see Outreach Clinics)

Support and Advice for Relatives

We can provide support for individual’s relatives and our telephone helpline is available for guidance.

Residential Unit

We provide a residential 19 day treatment programme based at Sunnyside Royal Hospital, Montrose.

Admissions are arranged, if appropriate, via your counsellor following assessment. The programme focuses on helping individual’s to understand issues which influence their drinking and how best to consider other methods of dealing with them in the future.

Treatment provided involves both group based therapy and individual counselling.

Support Groups

We also provide weekly support meetings in Arbroath, Dundee, and Perth as an added treatment option. There is also available a separate weekly women’s group meeting for additional support.

T.A.P.S. Staff

The T.A.P.S. staff deal specifically with people who have alcohol related problems in a confidential setting.

The T.A.P.S. team consists of medical and nursing staff working in both Community and Residential settings. T.A.P.S. has links with other agencies working in the field such as Social Work Department’s Drug and Alcohol Team, Tayside Council on Alcohol and Alcoholics Anonymous and can assist clients in contacting these organisations.
