Fellowship award for NHS Tayside consultant psychiatrist

An NHS Tayside consultant psychiatrist has been honoured with a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.

Dr Peter Connelly was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians at an award ceremony last month. As well as his consultant psychiatrist role, Dr Connelly is also Co-Director of the Scottish Dementia Clinical Research Network (SDCRN).

Fellowship is the highest level of membership of the Royal College of Physicians and comes with many responsibilities. It recognises clinical achievement, confers international peer recognition and presents enhanced professional opportunities to contribute to standard-setting and policy influencing activities. Fellowship is by nomination only and individuals cannot apply to be a Fellow.

Dr Connelly has been a consultant in old age psychiatry at Murray Royal Hospital in Perth since 1987. Along with colleagues, he led a successful bid to establish the SDCRN for an initial three-year period from August 2008 and also the extension of the Network’s mandate until March 2015.

He has made close links with equivalent networks in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and, through his current role as Chair of the Old Age Faculty of the UK College of Psychiatrists, he hopes to be able to bring the best evidence-based practice and research findings into Scotland to bring improvements in the services delivered to people with dementia and their families and carers.

Congratulating Dr Connelly on his award, NHS Tayside Medical Director Dr Andrew Russell said, “Peter is a worthy recipient of this honour which recognises his contribution to old age psychiatry and dementia research in Scotland.”
