Art works for MS in Perth and Kinross

A display of felt art work created by people with multiple sclerosis went on display today (Friday) in Moncrieff Community Centre in Perth.

Participants produced the work during an eight-week creative art programme delivered by Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT) and supported by Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society Scotland Perth and Kinross branch.

During the programme the participants explored a variety of felt making techniques, wet felt making and sculpted objects.

The programme was delivered by THAT lead artist Jude Gove, with volunteer support from Annette McBride and supported by MS Perth and Kinross Branch Chair Heather McQueen.

Jude said, “Through exploration and creating the felt pieces for themselves, participants have realised that although this technique is a fairly time consuming process, the range of possibilities is huge. Everyone in the group has responded in their own unique way and made some lovely individual work.”

Heather McQueen, MS Society Perth and Kinross Chair, said, “This programme has been a great initiative for all the participants and introduced a new therapeutic area of interest that people and our MS branch have very much enjoyed.”

THAT development officer Karine Neill said, “It has been a real journey with this group and they have been incredibly supportive of each other during the programme.”

The art programme model has been developed by THAT for delivery in community and day care settings. The programmes are designed to encourage people affected by health issues to explore and develop their creativity and recognise that they have abilities and talents that can be enjoyed and celebrated. THAT actively promotes and develops creative and interesting ways of including the arts within healthcare settings across Tayside.
