Long road to recovery

A Piperdam man has donated £3,500 to ward 27 at Ninewells Hospital to thank staff for his care.

In January 2000, Andy Gibb was playing football for Auchterhouse Admiral when six minutes into the game he broke his right leg, fracturing the tibia and fibia.

He was taken to Ninewells Hospital where he had surgery to fit a metal pin and nails to repair the break. He developed an infection and over the next 20 months he underwent multiple operations tests and treatments.

Andy came very close to losing his leg but after an operation to fit a cage and remove the infection, the surgeons managed to save his leg.

Andy said, “I had many highs and lows on my road to recovery and the staff were always there to lift me up when I needed it the most. Hospital can be a scary, lonely place and the staff make it welcoming, safe and homely.

“I had to attend physiotherapy and Tansy, one of the physiotherapists, was there every step of the way with me keeping my spirits up.

“I have always wanted to repay the kindness and help given to me when I needed it. It’s taken me a long time to get back on my feet and be in a position where I could do something about it.

“I started off with a fundraising event in May when some friends and I did the Three Peaks Challenge. In November, I held a silent auction and raised additional funds.

“I will never forget what I went through and the people who helped me along the way. Thank you so very much for everything you have all done for me.”

Senior charge nurse Susan Lundie, said, “On behalf of everyone I would like to say thank you very much to Andy and his friends and family for this amazing donation. The donation will be put towards patient comfort and to purchase electric fans for the ward.”
