Amy’s art exhibition showcases staff portraits
Amy Tavendale, a patient at the Centre for Brain Injury Rehabilitation (CBIR), held an art exhibition of her paintings of staff at the centre.
Amy has been helped with her recovery at the centre for several months following complications and illnesses after an operation to correct an underbite left her in a coma.
An art graduate from the University of Highlands and Islands, Amy used art as part of her recovery and painted portraits of staff at the CBIR and invited staff, friends and family to an exhibition of her work. Local bakers Fisher & Donaldson kindly donated a celebration cake featuring Amy’s work for the occasion.
Speaking about her work, Amy said, “When I came to CBIR, I saw there was an art class and although I had lost the ability to draw, I still really wanted to do art. The portraits are in no particular order, but hopefully it is easy to tell my early stuff from my more recent work. This exhibition shows the progress in my recovery. Art has been a great therapy as it has helped me to stop shaking which has allowed me to do other functions in my everyday life.”
CBIR Artist Christine Goodman said, “Amy has manifested a real gift in the production of these portraits, drawing on her courage and inner strength coupled with her joie de vivre that has been evident throughout her time at the CBIR and that she sustains to the present day.”
Amy has already put her artistic skills to good use having raised money for the centre by selling a children’s book which she wrote and illustrated herself.
