Dundee musicians unite for Roxburghe House in honour of David Bowie

A group of local musicians have raised £1000 for Roxburghe House as a tribute to David Bowie, who passed away in January following a battle with cancer.

Thirteen acts took part in a special event at Buskers in Dundee to pay tribute to the singer. ‘Heroes: a celebration of David Bowie’ was organised by musicians Nicola Madill and Paul ‘Lefty’ Wright, Busker’s promoter Dougie Black and music supporter Daisy Dundee.

The event saw 41 of Dundee’s finest musicians covering David Bowie’s work in their own style with some unique one-off collaborations prepared especially for the occasion. The live music was also followed by a Bowie-themed disco with guest DJs.

Entry to the gig was by donation and, along with a cake stall and additional donations on the night, the event raised £1000 for Roxburghe House. The money was split evenly between the Patient Comfort Fund and the Community Macmillan Nurse Fund.

Organiser Nicola Madill said, “We’re so pleased that we managed to raise so much money for Roxburghe House, whose dedicated staff have looked after so many of our loved ones and their families when they needed it most.

“I’d personally like to say a massive thank you to the musicians – not just for their performances on the night but for the hours they put in rehearsing and coordinating behind the scenes – to Buskers for donating their venue and everyone who helped out baking treats and making stage props.”

Senior charge nurse Marnie Ferguson added, “I would like to thank the musicians for this very kind donation. Donations such as this allow us to provide extra comforts that are not otherwise available, and make the environment more homely for our patients and their families.”
