Schoolboy’s sweet donation to children’s ward

Kirriemuir primary schoolboy Bradley Franchi, along with his mum Laura, visited Ninewells Hospital to hand over a selection of sweet-filled mugs to ward 29 (children’s ward).

Bradley, aged 8, attends Northmuir Primary School in Kirriemuir and has been kept very busy these past months taking part in the Making a Difference Awards at his school.

Making a Difference Awards are run annually and are open to pupils in primaries three to seven. Pupils undertake different projects at home, in school or in the community which ‘make a difference’. These projects can range from baking cakes, helping with gardening or looking after pets, sponsored walks or voluntary work. By choosing take part in these awards, it is hoped that pupils will have an increased sense of responsibility to the community they live in.

Primary 7 pupils at Northmuir Primary School hosted a fundraising event in the Town Hall in Kirriemuir which gave pupils at the school the opportunity to choose a charity and run a stall to raise funds for their chosen charity.

Bradley, who is in Primary 4, decided to hold a stall at the event selling a variety of items including sweets in a mug with the aim of donating the funds to his local football team where he has just started playing. To drum up support and donations for his stall he wrote letters to shops in Forfar, Kirriemuir and Dundee to ask for donations to raffle and asked his friends and family to donate sweets, teddies and prizes too. His aunt gave a donation covering the cost of the mugs and suggested that Bradley could donate them to a good cause.

As Bradley had recently had a trip to the Tayside Children’s Hospital at Ninewells and he thought it would be nice to give the sweet-filled mugs to a children’s ward.

Ward 29 senior charge nurse Catherine Borland, said, “I would like to say a big thank you to Bradley for this very kind donation. It is very thoughtful of him to think of donating to the children’s ward and it is very much appreciated. I am sure these mugs will bring a smile to the children’s faces.”

Bradley has been an enthusiastic supporter of the Making a Difference Awards and has, over the last year, carried out a range of tasks which so far has raised £1117.72. These tasks each lasted one term time and included looking after a pet, doing the washing up at home and carrying out recycling at home.

Bradley also got very busy in his family’s kitchen and made cakes and cookies for people attending a local church, as well as making lots of decorations and pictures to brighten the local day care centre in Forfar. Alongside this, Bradley has also carried out some fundraising and sold badges for Redwings Mountains animal sanctuary and handed out collection cans to some shops in Forfar.
