Fellowship award for NHS Tayside palliative care specialist
An NHS Tayside palliative care specialist has been honoured at an award ceremony in London after completing a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship.
Dr Ann-Marie Todd was presented with a specially-designed Churchill medallion to mark the completion of her Fellowship. Dr Todd was awarded the Fellowship to research educational opportunities for carers and to review current practice within palliative medicine, both in community settings and hospitals.
The Winston Churchill Memorial Trust is the UK’s national memorial to Sir Winston Churchill and each year the Trust awards Travelling Fellowship grants to UK citizens in a range of fields to enable them to carry out research projects overseas.
These projects are designed to exchange ideas and best practice, and build greater understanding between people and different cultures, in order that professions and communities in the UK can benefit from these shared experiences.
As part of the Fellowship, Dr Todd travelled to Singapore to investigate training workshops for families about to care for a relative with palliative care needs at home, with a view to introducing similar training workshops in the UK.
Dr Todd said, “The Travelling Fellowship gave me an opportunity to travel abroad to work on a worthwhile project and learn from other areas where home care programmes have been successful. It was a wonderful opportunity and I can now bring back the benefit to others by sharing the results of my new knowledge with colleagues in Tayside.”
Clinical lead in palliative medicine for NHS Tayside, Dr Deans Buchanan said, “We are very grateful to the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust for awarding this Fellowship and we are very proud of Dr Todd in achieving this. We are also very grateful to the team in Singapore who hosted Dr Todd during her Fellowship.
“Dr Todd was delighted to discover the existent links between Tayside and Singapore when she worked with the team. These links are now even stronger and it has been great to find that learning from each other has been of benefit to all the partners involved in the Fellowship.”
