Celebration of Printmaking Autumn School at DCA

A group of bold prints created by people from across Tayside with long-term health conditions were displayed today (Friday) at Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA).

The colourful collection of prints were created by participants of the ST/ART@DCA autumn school programme, part of Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust’s (THAT) ongoing partnership with the DCA Learning Programme.

Participants living with long-term conditions such as stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis and chronic pain have attended the intermediate printmaking autumn school programmes in October and November.

Printmaking tutors, DCA Learning staff, and THAT volunteer artists worked closely with participants to introduce them to photographic-based techniques in both etching and screen printing.

The celebration event to mark the conclusion of the programme was held in the DCA Activity Room where the participants’ art work will be on display until Wednesday, 29 November, 2017.

Participants spoke highly of the programme:

    • “I loved the creative photo etching and working with all the helpers. It helped me to speak out with confidence. The process helped my concentration.”

    • “Thank you for the opportunity to participate. It is so important to me to bring out the fun within me to overcome the sad.”

    • “It lifted my mood getting out and doing new activities and socialising.”

Project coordinator for THAT Chris Kelly said, “The display is an excellent showcase of this year’s autumn schools and a celebration of each participant’s hard work and achievements.”

Scott Hudson, DCA Learning Coordinator, said, “The ST/ART@DCA Project partnership continues to produce fantastic work and forms a big part of our core activity in the Learning Programme. It is great to see people from the ST/ART project now coming back in to the cinema or to do a Print Studio course here. We are already looking forward to planning the next term.”

ST/ART is an arts project primarily for stroke and acquired brain injury participants across Tayside, which is run by THAT in association with NHS Tayside. The DCA Learning Programme has support from RJ Larg Family Trust and the Leng Charitable Trust.
