Audiology department named Team of the Year
NHS Tayside’s Audiology department has won the British Academy of Audiology Team of the Year Award.
The prize is awarded to a team which has worked together to improve the quality of service in the area.
NHS Tayside Chairman Professor John Connell visited the team to congratulate them on their success and took a tour of the department at Kings Cross Health and Community Care Centre.
Professor Connell said, “This award is a superb tribute to the entire team which delivers outstanding care for patients and their families with hearing difficulties. They combine innovation, commitment and compassion and richly deserve this recognition.”
The Audiology department has an extensive adult rehabilitative, paediatric and vestibular audiology service under one roof which allows for close collaboration and multidisciplinary working. The team has a focus on quality improvement and has been looking at ways to improve the patient journey, trying out new pathways within the service.
One project established a new pathway where patients with Vestibular Neuritis and Labyrinthitis are seen by vestibular audiologists rather than ENT consultants which reduced waiting times and cut down on repeat appointments for assessment and diagnosis. NHS Tayside is the only audiology department in Scotland to run this clinic but it is hoped that its success can be replicated across the country.
The project also resulted in the department being short listed for the Advancing Healthcare Awards Innovation in Practice award and receiving the NHS Tayside Innovation in Practice Gold STAR Award.
