Children from Perth and Kinross have been jumping into action at a summer Fit Club in Perth.

Nearly twenty children who attend the Sunflower Centre based at Perth Royal Infirmary took part in the club, which was run in partnership with the Perth College Academy of Sports and Wellbeing.

The Sunflower Centre provides Allied Professional Health Services for children. Staff work with children from birth to 18-years-old who have a variety of medical conditions which can impact on their health and wellbeing.

Physiotherapists from the centre wanted to provide children who attend mainstream schools with a school holiday club that brought them together, with a focus on physical activity.

The Fit Club provided a programme of physiotherapy activities, including general circuit work, boogie balance, climbing wall and use of gym equipment. Representatives from Scottish Disability Sport also visited during the three-day programme to meet with the young people taking part.

The programme aimed to provide physiotherapy activities in the community, whilst also encouraging the children and their families to become more active and give them ideas of activities that they can engage in.

Paediatric Physiotherapist Jane Dernie said, “The Fit Club was a big success and the children all seemed to really enjoy the activities. We wanted to give the children who attend physiotherapy new opportunities for activity and bring them together to take part.

“The college were very supportive of the programme and we were able to use their state-of-the art gym facilities.

“We are keen to look at delivering the programme again as initial feedback from staff, parents and children has been very positive.”
