Professor James Ferguson recognised with prestigious award

Former consultant dermatologist Professor James Ferguson has been awarded the 2018 Sir Archibald Gray Medal by the British Association of Dermatologists.

The Sir Archibald Gray Medal is presented annually to a dermatologist who has made unparalleled contributions to dermatology in the UK. Professor Ferguson, who retired from NHS Tayside as head of the photobiology unit and dermatology department in 2013, is the only photodermatologist to have been given this prestigious award.

He was instrumental in establishing and evolving the photobiology unit at Ninewells Hospital, which has hosted the only specialist photobiology service in Scotland since the 1970s, and has made major contributions to photodermatology at UK and international levels through his clinical, research and teaching activities.

Consultant dermatologist Professor Sally Ibbotson said, “Professor Ferguson made major inroads into our understanding of rare photosensitivity diseases and photodiagnostic techniques, transforming the investigation of drug photosensitivity. He was also instrumental in introducing current UVB phototherapy in the UK and beyond.

“He has played key roles, not only in photodermatology, but also in dermatology in general and is extremely well regarded as a modest, kind and erudite man who has provided so much to so many, without expecting any recognition.”
