NHS Tayside celebrates AHPs Day

Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) in Tayside are joining in the celebrations today (Monday, 15 October) as part of AHPs Day.

AHPs work with children and adults to improve health and wellbeing, working with people to become as independent and able as possible through all stages of life. They work in many settings; in schools and nurseries, in hospitals, in GP practices, in community settings and in people’s homes.

AHPs are core to health and social care services and are engaged in the diagnosis, rehabilitation, and prevention of illness, disorder and disability focusing on what people need to make the most of their choices regarding their health and wellbeing.

The annual AHPs Day recognises the contribution of staff working in these professions and highlights the important role AHPs play as the third largest section of workforce in the NHS.

NHS Tayside Director of Allied Health Professions Karen Anderson said, “We have more than 900 AHPs working within NHS Tayside and they do a critical part in people’s lives across the region, helping them to live active and independent lives.

“Our AHP teams work with people of all ages who have an issue that is impacting on their ability to function. They can help support people to regain movement or become more active, overcome visual problems, improve their nutritional status, develop communication abilities and restore confidence in everyday living skills including returning to employment and education. By working with people on what matters to them, AHPs can help them to enjoy and improve quality of life.

“AHP Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and highlight the role that AHPs play in Tayside and across the NHS.”

To mark the day, information stands about AHPs are being held in the oncology outpatient clinic area in Ninewells Hospital. Paediatric physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists are also visiting Asda in Forfar to raise awareness of the services provided by AHPs.
