Inspiring young fundraiser raises money for Roxburghe House

Seven-year-old Charlie Watts visited Roxburghe House yesterday (Thursday) to hand over £4,444.44 in memory of his mum.

On 25 August, Charlie walked across the Tay Road Bridge “loads of times” over 10 hours to raise money in memory of his mum Eileen. This date is very special to him, as it would have been his mum’s 52^nd birthday.

Charlie, who has four brothers, decided he wanted to fundraise for Roxburghe House where their mum passed away five years ago following a battle with cancer.

Charlie said, “My brother Zak was talking about what he did to raise money for Red Nose Day. I thought maybe I could raise money for a charity. I asked my dad where mum lived when she was unwell. He told me it was Roxburghe House and I asked if I could raise money for them.

“I really miss my mum and I enjoy talking about her. I want to do something to keep her memory alive and it’s my way of showing her how much I love and miss her.”

Charlie’s dad Adam said, “We often visit The Sanctuary in Roxburghe House close to the room where Eileen died, particularly at Christmas. We have both happy and sad memories there.

“When Charlie told me he wanted to raise money for them, I broke down in tears. It was a proud dad moment. It’s an amazing thing to do, especially at such a young age.

“It was Charlie’s birthday yesterday so we thought it would be a nice day to meet the staff at Roxburghe House and keep the birthday theme going.”

Accepting the donation, chaplain Patrick Sullivan said, “I am delighted to accept this donation on behalf of everyone at Roxburghe House. Thank you to Charlie for this amazing donation. I can’t believe how much he raised, and how long he walked. He is a very inspiring young man. Happy 8^th birthday Charlie!”
