Ninewells Emergency Department scoops national award

Design work to improve patient experience in the Emergency Department in Ninewells picked up ‘Patient Experience Project of the Year Award’ at the Royal College of Emergency Medicine Annual Awards.

Earlier this year, medical and design students from the University of Dundee worked with staff in the Emergency Department (ED) at Ninewells Hospital to improve the patient experience using innovative design techniques. The improvement work has now been recognised with a national award by the Royal College of Medicine.

Students worked with patients and staff on the project to understand the main issues experienced in the ED. They mapped out and designed infographics about patient journeys through the ED so patients could understand how the department works, what to expect and what healthcare professional they are talking to. New signage was created to ensure patients can find their way easily to different parts of the department.

Emergency Consultant Shobhan Thakore said, “This award is great news and is national recognition of the commitment we show to providing an excellent experience for patients in our department. It also shows how our continued quality improvement work in collaboration with the University of Dundee is leading to positive innovation.”

Dr Taj Hassan, President of the Royal College of Emergence Medicine, said, “The RCEM showcase the fantastic work and patient-centred care being delivered in emergency departments across the country.

“With the majority of emergency departments struggling with the continual pressures of exit block, lack of hospital beds and insufficient workforce numbers, it is easy to forget the good practice and positive work going on every day. It is important to recognise and celebrate the achievements of emergency department staff who go above and beyond for patients and colleagues every single day of the week.”
