Tayside consultant’s marathon effort for ARCHIE Tayside
A NHS Tayside consultant put his best foot forward to raise over £3500 for a new theatre suite at Tayside Children’s Hospital.
Consultant physician Dr Tom Fardon headed to the Big Apple in November to take part in the New York City Marathon in aid of the ARCHIE Tayside Children’s Hospital appeal.
Tom said, “Having been part of the team that did The Archies Mountain Challenge in 2015 I was keen to do some more fundraising this year for the ARCHIE Foundation. They were able to offer me a place in the New York City Marathon and I trained for many months, including a number of local and national races to prepare. This was my second marathon, after I completed one in Manchester last April.
“On the day there was over 52,000 runners participating. I finished in three hours, three minutes and 41 seconds, which was exactly five minutes faster than my time in Manchester. I also managed to raise over £3500 for ARCHIE in the process.”

Cassie Thompson, Director of Partnerships at The ARCHIE Foundation, said, “Well done to Tom who ran the marathon in a great time and smashed his fundraising target.
“There was a great atmosphere at the New York Marathon and it was great to see Tom and our other fundraisers having such a good time, while raising vital funds for ARCHIE. The efforts of Tom, and his fellow ARCHIE runners is greatly appreciated.”
A keen runner, Tom is also Run Director for Dundee’s Camperdown parkrun, a free 5k event for walkers and runners of all ages and abilities that takes place every Saturday morning and was established in 2012 with funding from Tayside Health Fund.
The Archies Mountain Challenge was a relay event which saw 57 runners, mainly NHS Tayside employees, tackle 130 mountains in Scotland over 1000m, nicknamed ‘Archies’. The Challenge began at Dingwall and finished at the ‘Rest and Be Thankful’ at Arrochar. There was also another 70 supporters involved in three community walks, which also formed part of the challenge. The walks took place up Ben Wyvis, Lochnagar and Schiehallion.
