Saltire Awards presented to young NHS Tayside volunteers

Seven NHS Tayside volunteers have been presented with a national award which recognises the commitment and contribution of young people in volunteering.

The Saltire Award is a Scottish Government youth award which celebrates the volunteering achievements of young people.

NHS Tayside volunteers aged between 16 and 25 can sign up to record their hours and learning gained through volunteering placements and claim certificates for key milestones.

Saltire Award certificates were presented to the following volunteers at Ninewells Hospital:

• Mariana Khoury (Ninewells Gift Shop and previously Ward 18) – 100 hours

• Stephanie Cartner (Patient feedback and previously Area 6A) – 50 hours

• Sid Sripada (Ward 6) – 50 hours

• Caitlyn Scott (Ward 6) – 50 hours

• Rugaiyuah Hussein (Ward 3) – 25 hours

• Nyorin Islam (Ward 19) – 10 hours

• Hassan Meah (Ward 4) – 10 hours

Ward 6 activities volunteer Caitlyn Scott said, “I volunteer to benefit others but you do benefit yourself in the process because you learn and develop so many skills that you can use in later life. Seeing how many hours you have spent working with patients and working on those skills helps remind you of that. When I got my award it also sunk in that I had spent 50 whole hours with people who may have otherwise spent that time alone, so that drove me to aim higher.”

Ward 4 volunteer Hassan Meah added, “Achieving this Saltire Award has made me reflect on the time I have dedicated to supporting other people and it is what motivates me to work harder and achieve even greater goals.”
