Mobile scanner will reduce waiting times

As part of NHS Tayside’s remobilisation plans to safely increase services and reduce waiting times, a mobile MRI van is being used to deliver healthcare services to patients requiring an MRI scan.

The mobile scanner is being shared by NHS Tayside and NHS Fife and has been alternating between the two health boards throughout July. The arrangement will continue through August and further dates are being agreed. More than 200 patients have already been seen in the mobile van during July.

Michael Conroy, Imaging manager with NHS Tayside said, “The coronavirus pandemic has impacted on waiting times for MRI scans. This solution enables us to see more patients and over the coming months will bring our waiting times back to pre-COVID levels.

“The mobile van is based at Perth Royal Infirmary and the team can scan roughly 15 patients a day. This will allow 300 patients per month to be seen in addition to the patients receiving an MRI scan in our hospitals.”

The van moves location overnight to avoid any scan time being lost.
