Saltire Awards presented to young NHS Tayside volunteers
Three NHS Tayside volunteers have been presented with a national award which recognises the commitment and contribution of young people in volunteering.
Gregor Angus, Marcel Al-Horoub and Pip Forster received the Saltire Award which is a Scottish Government scheme which allows volunteers aged between 16 and 25 to record their hours and learning gained through placements and claim certificates for key milestones.
Gregor was presented with a Saltire Award certificate for 100 hours with NHS Tayside, while Marcel and Pip were each recognised for 50 hours of volunteering. All three were ward volunteers before COVID-19 and continued to volunteer in Ninewells Hospital in different ways throughout the pandemic.
They have all helped support the ward Essentials Boxes scheme, which saw donated toiletries, snacks, magazines and other comfort items distributed to hospital wards for patients and staff, as well as the delivery of newspapers to wards.
Marcel said, “I miss volunteering on the wards but enjoyed helping to set up the new COVID-19 Response volunteer role. I found volunteering satisfying.”
Gregor said, “I enjoyed helping with the new COVID-19 Response role and have enjoyed the opportunity to meet more volunteers as a result of this as well as helping to show them what to do.”
Pip said, “Volunteering during the pandemic has given me increased respect for the roles outwith the wards and how they are vital for the hospital to run.”
Gregor, Marcel and Pip are all about to begin studying Medicine at the University of Dundee and are looking forward to this new chapter in their lives.
Voluntary Services Manager Val Ewan said, “I would like to thank Gregor, Marcel and Pip for their contributions to NHS Tayside. Their input during the pandemic has been outstanding and I wish them all the best for the future.”
