Specialist skin care service recognised for clinical expertise
The Scottish Cutaneous Porphyria Service (SCPS), based at the Photobiology Unit at Ninewells Hospital, has been recognised for its clinical expertise by the European Porphyria Network.
The SCPS is a national service dedicated to the diagnosis and management of cutaneous porphyrias, which are a group of disorders that cause skin-related symptoms. This can include photosensitivity leading to pain upon exposure to daylight, or blistering and fragility in daylight-exposed skin sites.
The centre has recently received an official endorsement for its clinical expertise from the European Porphyria Network (EPNET), which aims to improve healthcare services for porphyria patients.
The SCPS works closely with other specialities across NHS Tayside to provide care and support for patients, including haematology, hepatology, gastroenterology and genetics.
Vicky McGuire, Principal Clinical Scientist at the SCPS, said the accolade from EPNET was very much welcomed by the team.
She said, “We are delighted to receive this endorsement, which recognises the clinical and scientific expertise of the team in the service.
“This endorsement supports the way in which the SCPS provides comprehensive care for patients with confirmed or suspected cutaneous porphyrias from across Scotland, as well as recognising our collaborative working with other teams in NHS Tayside and the service’s commitment to teaching, training and research.”
The SCPS is also an integral part of both the British and Irish Porphyria Network and the European Porphyria Network.
