Murray Royal nursing team shortlisted for top award
A nursing team from NHS Tayside which changed practice and culture on a unit for patients with acute mental health conditions is up for a prestigious award.
The team, which works on the 22-bed inpatient acute admissions Moredun ward at Murray Royal Hospital in Perth, has been selected from hundreds of entries as finalists in the Mental Health Nursing category of the RCN Nursing Awards 2022.
They will find out if they have won at a ceremony in London on Thursday 6 October.
Keith Russell, Nurse Director for Mental Health and Learning Disabilities with NHS Tayside said, “I would like to congratulate the team in Moredun for their achievement under the leadership of senior charge nurse Emma Lawrence.
“Improved observation practice on the ward has renewed our person-centred approach to patient care and observation ensuring that early recognition, intervention and patient involvement are a key focus.
“Collabaration and meaningful therapeutic relationships are central to how we work with patients and our new ways of working help patients have greater involvement in decisions about their care and the type of support and interventions that are helpful to them.”
Despite the increased demands of the pandemic, the team used improvement methodology to change practice and culture in line with updated and evidence-based observation practice.
Mr Russell added, “The team is motivated every day to work positively and therapeutically with the patients in their care and it is hugely rewarding to see the efforts of the whole team being recognised in this way.
“Having this hard work and dedication recognised and rewarded feels like a bonus on top of seeing the positive effect it has had on patient care.”
NHS Professionals chief nurse and director of clinical governance Juliette Cosgrove said, “I am delighted that we are sponsoring the Mental Health Nursing category at this year’s RCN Awards.
“The therapeutic relationship built up by mental health nurses with their patients is crucial to good outcomes. As we see demand for mental health nurses increasing, this award celebrates the inspirational work of so many of them in the specialism.”
