Strathearn Arts hosts ‘Creative Conditions’ art display
Visual art work created by local participants living with long-term conditions went on display today (Monday) at Strathearn Arts in Crieff.
The drawing, painting and printmaking works were produced as part of the ST/ART art projects which support people across Tayside who have had a stroke and acquired brain injury.
The project is run by Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT), in association with NHS Tayside and contributes to participants’ health and wellbeing.
This is the first time that ST/ART has partnered with Strathearn Arts to deliver this service for this area of Perthshire. These visual art sessions are part of the larger creative engagement programmes for people with long-term conditions currently being provided by THAT.
During the eight-session ’Creative Conditions’ programme, participants experimented with different materials and techniques, taking autumn in nature as a central theme, producing colourful prints, collages and picture panels.
Supporting the participants throughout the programme was Lead artist Sarah Draper who said, “It was great to be working with this new group at Strathearn Arts. They were nearly all new to the ST/ART Project and were a bit anxious to begin with but we all settled in and had a great time experimenting and learning.
“Although each participant had their own impairment, with the right level of support everyone was able to enjoy the making process. The group’s confidence grew each week and they produced some wonderful colourful work.”
Strathearn Arts administration assistant Poppy Sexton, commented, “It has been lovely to welcome a new group of local participants into Strathearn Arts and to be able to work with Sarah and the ST/ART Project. The programme emphasis of arts and health and wellbeing fits very well with the Strathearn philosophy and approach and we are confident we will want to develop this partnership further.”
THAT projects co-ordinator Chris Kelly said, “It has been great to find an interested partner keen to develop their local service and embrace the participant groups we support and promote. Sarah has done a marvellous job and suggested all sorts of possibilities for exploring as possible future programmes. I’m sure we will be back soon offering further access to our service in this wonderful part of Perthshire.”
THAT was set up in 2002 and promotes creative engagement, using a variety of different art forms, as a means of improving the health and well being of participants with a range of long-term conditions.
