Alex Mudie, who has clocked up 25 hours volunteering on Ward 18 at Ninewells, said, “I feel volunteering is a positive contribution to healthcare and I hope my chats with patients on the ward make their stay in hospital a little better bit better. All of the staff in Ward 18 have made me feel very welcome and volunteering has been a great confidence booster to me and a good break from university studies.”
Maternity Triage volunteer Breindal Tony-Enejeta said, “Joining the volunteering service has been a good decision for me. At the start I found it a little hard to converse with patients, but after talking to the staff at the volunteering hub and also talking to the nurses at the ward, it has become a lot easier to talk to them which has really increased my confidence as well as my communication skills. I am delighted to receive this recognition of my volunteering.”
Haajirah Arshad, who volunteers in Ward 19, said, “I am enjoying volunteering in Ward 19 and it was a lovely surprise to find out how many hours I had been volunteering for through the Saltire Awards.”
Ward 26 volunteer Cameron Yule added, “Thank you so much for recognising and acknowledging my volunteering hours, I was excited to receive the email inviting me to collect the award. The volunteering experience so far has been amazing. I was nervous initially to chat to patients but have now gained confidence to do this. Volunteering has also provided an insight into my chosen career of nursing.”
Voluntary Services Manager Val Ewan said, “I am always grateful for our volunteers giving their time to help out in the hospital, and Saltire Awards are a great way to recognise the contributions that young volunteers make to NHS Tayside. Today is International Volunteers Day 2022 and it seems a fitting way to celebrate the achievements of these young people.
“I know many of them are interested in careers in healthcare and are currently applying to study nursing or medicine so I wish them success in their applications.”
