Vocal Chord Singing for Wellbeing in Perth and Kinross

Members of Vocal Chord, a singing group for people with long-term health conditions, shared their singing talents today (Monday, 12 December) at The Space in Perth Theatre.

Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust’s (THAT) Vocal Chord long-term conditions singing group shared their singing talent in The Space at Perth Concert Hall. The programme is delivered in association with Perth Theatre and Concert Hall and supported by The Gannochy Trust, The Big Lottery Community Fund, NHS Tayside and THAT.

Singing coach Debra worked with participants over the eight session programme which featured gentle harmonies and a variety of warm up techniques as well as introducing the group to new songs. The emphasis was to sing loud and strong. Debra was supported by singing coach, Emma Neck, and THAT volunteer Annette McBride, who provided invaluable support to the group harmonies and the smooth running of the programme.

Debra said, “I am absolutely amazed at the sound and quality vocals from the group. They sound fantastic and they are a wonderful group to work with. Everyone is working very hard and I look forward to doing more work with the group.”

THAT development officer Karine Neill said, “Vocal Chord is making very positive improvements. Through singing and coming together as a group they sound very strong and that is wonderful. It is fantastic to have both Debra and Emma working with THAT for this programme delivery and the song repertoire has been lovely.”

THAT Vocal Chord Group was recently shortlisted for one of Luminate’s 10th Anniversary Creative Ageing Awards. The project was nominated in the category of Arts in Older People’s Healthcare. After a huge response for nominations, Vocal Chord was one of three shortlisted nominees in its category.

Karine Neill and Debra Salem attended the award ceremony at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh on Tuesday, 22 November in recognition of the group’s long term achievements.

The Vocal Chord spring programme will take place in February 2023 in Perth Concert Hall’s Norie-Miller Studio. If you would like more information or would like to register to be part of this singing for wellbeing group, please contact Karine Neill on 01382 835509 or email karine.neill@nhs.scot

THAT promotes the therapeutic value of arts-based programmes to enhance quality of life, promote
