Spring school animations screened at DCA

A public screening of animations created by participants from across Tayside with long-term health conditions has launched at Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA).

This wonderful collection of work was created by participants of the ST/ART@DCA Spring school programmes, part of Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust’s (THAT) well established partnership with the DCA Learning Programme.

The animations were shown in Cinema 2 at the DCA to mark the conclusion of the programme and a display of artwork created for each animation was also on view in the meeting room at the centre. Participants, their families and friends, professional colleagues from DCA and THAT came together to celebrate the fantastic work achieved.

This year’s spring school programmes saw the return of the partnership’s popular Animation workshops. Participants were invited to explore personal ideas and stories that could be turned into short animations.

Seven participants living with a long-term condition, such as stroke, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and chronic pain, attended spring school programmes during March working with Andrew Low of the DCA Learning Team and other support staff.

THAT project coordinator Chris Kelly said, “It has been great to be back in the DCA doing Animation again after a four-year break. Having use of the technical equipment and the animation expertise at DCA make this a great opportunity for ST/ART participants. This reception in the DCA marks an important step forward for our participants, seeing their work on the big screen is an enormous boost to their confidence.”

ST/ART is an arts project primarily for stroke and acquired brain injury participants across Tayside, which is run by THAT in association with NHS Tayside.

The ST/ART@DCA partnership is supported by the Garfield Weston Foundation, The Hugh Fraser Foundation and Aberbrothock Skea Trust.
