A vibrant display of feltwork created by participants of ST/ART programme was celebrated at the Royal Victoria Hospital Neuro Hub.

The colourful display of feltwork including necklaces, bowls, birds and decorative pieces was shared with family, friends and invited guests at the finale celebration.

ST/ART is an engagement project for stroke and acquired brain injury participants. The project is run by Tayside Healthcare Arts Trust (THAT) in association with NHS Tayside and works with other stroke and acquired brain injury services across the area.

These creative sessions are part of the larger creative engagement projects for people with long-term conditions currently being delivered by THAT.

During the eight-session programme, lead artist Sarah Cushnie encouraged participants to experiment with both wet and dry feltmaking techniques to create a range of different decorative pieces.

The results show the range and versatility of this technique alongside the skill and enthusiasm of the participants, many of whom had never tried feltmaking before.

Sarah said, “I thoroughly enjoyed leading this programme and seeing the positive impact for participants being creative each week was incredibly rewarding. Feltmaking is a very accessible technique, and the participants had a lot of fun with it. I brought a large selection of wools and pre-felt in a variety of colours which everyone loved getting stuck into and trying out different combinations. As a result, the final display of work has great impact and shows how far everyone has come in the last eight weeks.”

THAT project management assistant David Scott said, “It’s been great to complete a full eight-week programme at the Royal Victoria Neuro Hub after running a series of short taster sessions last year. The group responded so well to Sarah and created a beautiful display of work with the assistance of NHS Tayside Volunteer Service. The sessions had a warm, friendly atmosphere and the group enjoyed both the creative process and each other’s company.”

THAT was set up in 2002 and promotes creative engagement using a variety of different art forms as a means of improving the health and wellbeing of participants with a range of long term conditions.
