Second year pupils in Dundee schools will explore emotional health and wellbeing during a ‘How We Feel’ dance tour.

Students at the Scottish School of Contemporary Dance (SCCD) at The Space, Dundee and Angus College are touring schools across the city over a three-week period from 30 October.

Each session includes a live performance and workshop, supported by health and project workers from a range of services across the city. Feelings of anger, loneliness and worry are just some of the emotions explored in the tour.

The Early Years and Young People Team at NHS Tayside worked alongside Dundee City Council’s Children and Families Service to arrange the city-wide school tour.

Alison Duncan, senior health promotion officer at NHS Tayside, said, “The creative movement used by the dance students provides a unique learning experience for S2 pupils. It is an excellent way of engaging with young people to help them focus on emotional health and wellbeing.

“Movement allows the dance students to express a wide range of feelings covering a spectrum of issues, and the workshops that follow allow pupils to meet with service providers to discuss the issues portrayed and investigate where the different characters featured in the performance could seek support, be it parents, carers, friends or support agencies.”

Eddie Gaines, Head of Performing Arts at Dundee and Angus College, added, “This tour is a wonderful opportunity for young learners from different contexts to help each other explore and discuss issues affecting their lives. This is by young people and for young people. It is a real privilege for everyone taking part to have this experience.”
