The Tayside Cancer Centre has made a number of new appointments to key roles as the service has focused on rebuilding local oncology teams over the past year. All breast cancer services are being delivered locally again in NHS Tayside.

The new appointments are the result of successful recruitment initiatives, including joint posts with other NHS Boards in Scotland.

Dr Hannah Lord, Consultant Oncologist and Clinical Lead for Tayside Cancer Centre said, “The service, with the support of the leadership team, has worked really hard over the last year to rebuild, with a continued focus on recruiting.

“I’m delighted that we now have a number of new people in key posts which has strengthened the service and is already benefiting the people of Tayside.

“With two new Clinical Oncologists in breast cancer now in post, all breast cancer services are once again being delivered locally in NHS Tayside. There is also a new joint Medical Oncologist post in breast cancer service.

“An additional two Consultant Oncologists joined the team in August, one specialising in gynaecological and upper gastrointestinal cancer, and the other, as a joint post with NHS Lothian, specialising in renal cancer.

“We also have three excellent newly-appointed Clinical Fellows who support the Acute Oncology service and wider teams, and who we hope will participate in the long term growth of the department.

“Many people may not be aware of the sizeable team of multidisciplinary professionals who make up the Tayside Cancer Centre including therapeutic radiographers and pharmacists amongst others. The medical staff are supported by fabulous nursing and specialist nursing teams as well as Community Macmillan nurses.

“The teams see almost 2,500 new patients per year, delivering treatments including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy and targeted tablet therapies. We also work closely with other departments including particularly Radiology, Pathology, Surgery and Palliative Care to deliver high quality, compassionate and person-centred cancer care.”

Dr Pamela Johnston, NHS Tayside Medical Director said, “Rebuilding cancer services in Tayside has been a key priority for the Board. I’m confident that with these new appointments, the service will continue to go from strength-to-strength. Everyone in Tayside Cancer Centre is committed to building the service and continuing to deliver excellent cancer care locally and the teams have my full support.”
